Travis Hanson Podiums at Sno*Drift Rally, Beats Deep Super Production Field

The son and father duo of Travis Hanson from Littleton, NH and Terry Hanson from Williamsburg, MI made Rally America history winning last year’s Sno*Drift Rally in a Super Production (SP) Class car. That was the first time an SP car had won an overall event in the Rally America National Championship series. It was a feat accomplished with a lot of skill and a little luck as the more powerful Open Class cars of the Subaru Rally Team USA and Rockstar Energy Drink Rally Team failed to finish, leaving the top spot to Travis and Terry Hanson. They finished the event with a 3 minute and 53.1 second lead over the next closest competitor.

This year, Travis and Terry Hanson made SP headlines again in their attempt to defend their 2011 Sno*Drift Rally crown. The Hansons were locked in an intense battle for the third-place-overall spot with a new Rally America contender, Leonid Urlichich, driving an Open Class Subaru WRX STI. Known as “Crazy Leo” to fans, Urlichich is a regular contender in the Canadian Rally Championship and made his American debut at this year’s Sno*Drift Rally.

Both teams traded positions and times. At one point Travis Hanson had physically passed “Crazy Leo” on stage before Urlichich overtook Hanson with better stage times and finished third overall in the standings. Ulrichich’s car, however, failed post-rally inspection and was penalized three positions to finish sixth overall. Urlichich protested the Steward’s decision and the Sno*Drift overall results will remain provisional pending the outcome of the protest.

Before Sno*Drift began the Hansons weren’t even sure if their engine would survive.

“I left New Hampshire with a good car, but was really bummed when I got to Michigan and the engine acted up,” said Travis Hanson.

The team decided to run Sno*Drift anyway, despite the engine’s loud groaning that kept reminding them the engine could quit at any time. Amazingly, the team won 22 consecutive stages in their class, finished third overall (assuming the results stand up against Urlichich’s protest) and first in Super Production.

“The engine was louder than the exhaust by the end of the rally,” said Travis Hanson, “I didn’t think it was going to last, but somewhere along the lines I started thinking we had a chance to finish! We were pretty happy with the result.”

Super Production cars have frequently appeared on the podium since its 2009 inception and has increasingly threatened Open Class dominance over the top spot as more talented drivers join the class.

One such driver is ex-factory team driver, Lauchlin O’Sullivan from San Francisco, CA, who used to drive for the Mitsubishi Rally team during the SCCA ProRally days. Today, he is a Super Production competitor and entered this year’s Sno*Drift Rally in a 2003 Mitsubishi EVO. It was the first time he piloted the Mitsubishi and on top of that, he had to race on some of the slipperiest conditions anyone has ever seen. O’Sullivan made it to the end and took 2nd in class despite being unfamiliar with the car.

The depth of the Super Production Class was also shown with the entrance of 2001 Belgium Rally Champ, David Steryckx from Santa Ana, CA, who experienced a similar situation as O’Sullivan at Sno*Drift. Steryckx built an SP 2011 Subaru WRS STI to contend the entire 2012 Rally America National Championship and drove it for the first time on ice. In fact, Sno*Drift was the very first snow event in which he has ever competed, and the team is very proud of their 3rd place class finish.

PMR Motorsports, Patrick Moro and Timothy Rooney, both from Dublin, OH, returned to the Super Production class after taking the 2011 season off. In first event back Moro placed a respectable 4th in Class and 9th overall in the standings.

“Stage rally is always where I wanted to be,” said Moro, “Good to be back at an event where everyone is helping each other out. It’s good people and good fun.”

Moro’s teammate, Timothy Rooney, wasn’t as lucky and retired from the race after they got stuck in the snow on stage 8. Rooney decided to withdraw to save the car from any more damage.

Exedy Racing’s Evan Cline from Brighton, MI, another perennial Super Production driver, placed 10th overall making him the 5th SP team to possess one of the top coveted 10 spots!

2011 American Super Producion champion Travis Hanson opened his defense of that title with a powerful statement winning the Sno*Drift Rally in Atlanta, Michigan with a double digit margin. Hanson and his father/co-driver Terry Hanson won the Super Production category by approximately 15 minutes. He was a bit disappointed, though, that two mistakes on the final two stages saw Canadian Crazy Leo Urlichich move back ahead to get the final spot on the podium. Here's a quick conversation with Hanson before the Podium celebrations in Hillman, Michigan.

Q&A with Travis Hanson, Super Production Champ Thursday, September 29, 2011 Super Production (SP) Class driver, Travis Hanson from Littleton, NH, had a sensational 2011 Rally America season making rally history as the highest finishing SP driver to date. On his way to a third place overall finish Hanson became the first SP driver to win an event overall at the season opener SnoDrift Rally in Atlanta, Michigan. Hanson stayed on top of the Rally America National Championship leaderboard until he ceded the lead to Subaru Rally Team USA’s David Higgins, who eventual took the 2011 Rally America National Championship. Travis Hanson and his co-driver and father, Terry Hanson, have been a perennial favorite with fans and fellow competitors year-after-year. We recently caught up with this dynamic driver after he got some much needed rest to reflect on this past year’s accomplishments, and took a look at the 2012 season which is only a few months away. RA: You made some significant strides this year in your car preparation over the last few years. What did you do differently to improve the reliability of your car?* HANSON: Over the past 3 years we have worked to make our car as reliable as possible. In a series of only 6 races there is no room for mechanical “Did Not Finishes”. There has been a lot of trial and error building up to the reliable car that we have now. We have blown up motors, had troubles with brakes and had electrical problems. So I guess you can say that we finally sorted out the car. Our pre-event preparations have made a huge difference this year as well. When championship points are on the line we have to make sure we have the best chance of finishing the race! That means really taking care of the car between events and being proactive to mechanical issues. It might cost more money to replace a part or take up more of your time, but the alternative is a possible DNF with no championship points, and a broken car that will still cost you time and money. RA: You also didn't replace a single panel on the car this year, yet you were able to finish near the top of the leader board at every event? How did you do that? HANSON: Consistency was something that I have struggled with. I have always felt like I had the speed to be competitive, but had a hard time finding the finish line. This year was different. Ultimately I think it came down to me not wanting to repair the car any more. After X Games in 2010 where I rolled the car, I never wanted to do body work again, haha! But really, I have lead the SP Championship before and lost due to inconsistency. There is no room for errors; you have to finish if you want to win. Overall I have just been patient this year and let the races come to me. It was very hard to lead the overall Championship for the first half of the season. I never wanted to place a wheel wrong, and I guess I did pretty well. All eyes were on me and it’s a lot of pressure to continually do well at every event, but finishing top 5 overall at every event was nothing short of miraculous. It was a dream season that will be hard to replicate. RA: Have you seen your driver profile and recognition increase since becoming the first SP driver to win an event overall? Do you have any funny or memorable fan memories from this season? HANSON: Yes. There were so many people at events that came up to me to congratulate me on a job well done. Everyone knows that we are a small family team that is self-funded and they appreciate our grassroots background. Everyone loves the underdog story! I have been told I am a true ambassador for the sport and for all grassroots racers out there. Honestly some people consider me “famous,” but I think of myself as just a regular guy who does regular things. RA: You've had incredible success with your father as your co-driver the past few years. What does he do to elevate your game? HANSON: To be able to compete with my dad this year has been an amazing experience. People tell me all the time that they would never be able to do Rally with their dad; too much fighting or bickering and probably crashing. The fact that I did so well in the Championship and did it with my dad is the best part. Years from now I might not remember who I was competing against or how I did at a particular event, but I will always remember the time I spent with my dad inside that rally car. RA: What was the most memorable moment you experienced this season? HANSON: The SnoDrift Rally had to be the most memorable moment of the year. SnoDrift was the very first event I attended (with my dad) and the event that was closest to where I grew up. SnoDrift is also my favorite event! To say that winning SnoDrift was a dream of mine is an understatement! I was not expecting to be atop the podium at the end of the event, and in a Super Production car! Once we were leading the event I was so nervous that I would screw up and crash out that I never really had time to enjoy it. It never really sunk in until the awards ceremony where we received a standing ovation as we accepted the trophy. I will never forget! RA: What are you doing this Fall and Winter to keep busy and remain on top of your Rally game? HANSON: Since New England Forest Rally I have done nothing to the car, or really anything Rally related. I went on a “real” vacation that didn’t include Rally and just spent time with family, friends and loved ones, new and old. It has been extremely nice, but I am starting to think about racing again. I still have to work on the Rally car a lot and I would like to start working on myself. I want to start working out and getting back in shape. If I want to get to the next level I will have to do more than just show up and drive a car, I am going to need more mental and physical capacity. RA: Are you making preparations for the 2012 season? If so, what do you want to accomplish now that you've set the SP bar higher? HANSON: I don’t have a great plan for 2012. I am unsure what the future will bring. I don’t have people knocking my door down to give me sponsorship dollars, nor do I expect anyone to do that. I have to get out and do some more marketing myself and see what becomes of it. Knowing that I did so well this year with the SP car I would like to raise the bar for 2012, but I’m not sure what that means just yet. Of course I would love to run at the top in Open Class, but that requires a lot more commitment in the car and out! Travis Hanson celebrates the most successful season of his career as the newly crowned Rally America Super Production Class Champion.

The 26-year-old from Littleton, NH flawlessly campaigned a 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX STI with his father Terry as co-driver to a remarkable third place finish in the overall Rally America National Championship - a feat never accomplished before by a Production driver.

Hanson began making history and headlines at the opening round of the 2011 season when he became the first Super Production driver to ever claim an outright win in the National Series, defeating the factory-backed Subaru team, the privateer Rockstar Rally team, and a slew of fast Open Class cars at the Sno*Drift Rally. The under-sponsored crew of Hanson and Hanson immediately captured the hearts of fans and gained significant attention from the media with their story of underdog triumph. Hanson went on to control the points lead of the overall Championship well into the fourth round of the six-round Series, another first for a Super Production team, and clinched the SP Class Title by the fifth round.

Hanson capped off a perfect year standing third on the overall podium at the New England Forest Rally (NEFR), the sixth and final round of the Championship. Maine's rough and rugged logging roads nearly put the privateer out of the event when he faced mechanical issues on the second day of the rally.

Hanson battled Tom Lawless, a quick Open Class driver, throughout the race. He explained, "we had a lead of about one minute at the start of the second day, but with the troubles we had he [Lawless] steadily gained time. We pushed the car as hard as possible to the edge of overheating and in the end were able to beat him to the podium by only 7 seconds!"

Although their Subaru suffered overheating issues and a cracked oil pan at the final race, the Hansons managed to finish the rally at the top. "It was great to see the team pull together and get the car back on the road. I am so lucky to have such a skilled crew...without them my success wouldn't have been possible," he said.

Hanson displayed dynamic driving abilities he has developed over the span of his young career by consistently finishing in the top five overall on each event of the 2011 Series. J.B. Niday, director of the RallyCar Rally America Championship, recognized the progress Hanson has made in his five years of driving at the National level. Niday congratulated Travis and Terry for their outstanding season by saying, "Travis has shown us his speed in the past, but this year he was consistently fast and drove six clean rallies. He certainly took his game to another level this season."

Hanson's high level of success is not easily achieved by privateers in this sport. Hanson said, "we have run season-long with a tiny budget, which we made work with help and support from our sponsors, friends and family." T. Travis Hanson emerged from the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally as the early champion of the 2011 Rally America Super Production Title. Throughout 2011 Hanson and his team have shown great maturity using strategy and consistent driving, the Pennsylvanian event was no exception taking their 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX STI to claim fourth overall, and second place in the Super Production class.

It wasn’t all smooth for Hanson. He battled personal allergies and drastically changing road conditions throughout the weekend, affecting his focus. By reducing speed and working as a team Travis and Terry got to the end of the rally as proud champions. Pending the appeal lodged against the OTR protest ruling, Hanson will have secured the Super Production class title by taking four consecutive class victories from the start of the season, a feat which no other driver has achieved to-date in the Rally America sanctioned series.

An elated Hanson said, “I am so excited about the Championship. We have been fighting for this for years. To be able to accomplish this goal with my dad is awesome.”

Championship and race wins most often focus on the driver, but in reality to get a rally car through an entire season, on some of the toughest terrains, it takes a solid team effort. Hanson wants to thank and praise his devoted team who worked so hard for the success earned.

“Our crew has been amazing all year. The pre-event preparations were immaculate helping on the really rough stages” said Travis, adding “The entire year has been great, and we could not have done it without each person involved. Thank you to our sponsors Team O’Neil Rally School, Olson’s Auto Body, OSLV, Exedy, Broken Motorsports and Dick Hannah Subaru for their support, without their backing we would not have had the opportunity to achieved what we have.”

Hanson sits third in the overall Rally America National Championship standings, with the New England Forest Rally next in the schedule, which he plans to contest. The Newry, Maine based rally is the final round ofthe 2011 Rally America National Championship season, and Hanson has a new goal, shooting for overall honors saying “we will go to NEFR ready to defend our top 3 position.”

Oregon Results to Remain Provisional Until Protest Ruling

The results of the 2011 Oregon Trail Rally will remain provisional pending the decision of a RallyCar Protest Committee about a claim filed by the Super Production team of Travis and Terry Hanson against Ramana Lagemann and co-driver Chrissie Beavis. The Rally America National Championship points standings will not be updated until a committee until this matter is final

A Protest Committee has been assembled consisting of individuals familiar with RallyCar’s rules. The Committee will interview relevant teams, officials, and witnesses to render a decision.

The outcome of the protest will have a direct bearing on both teams’ Oregon Trail Rally, Class, and overall Championship standings.

Any organizer, official, entrant, or competitor may appeal the decision by the Protest Committee within 30 minutes of its announcement. The appellant then has 10 days to submit their appeal. An Appeals Committee will be formed during the 10 day period and they will have 15 days to make a decision based on the appeal.

RallyCar will release a statement once the Protest Committee makes a decision on the Hansons’ claim.

Travis Hanson secured his third Super Production (SP) class victory of the season at the Washington based Olympus Rally, and in doing so retained the lead of both the overall and SP class standings.

The Hanson duo of son Travis and father Terry set about delivering a solid performance to bolster their standing in the SP Championship by leading the class throughout the event. The Hansons managed to stay ahead of their closest rival, Subaru Rally Team USA’s Dave Mirra, for the majority of the rally to keep a one point Championship overall lead.

However, the victory was bitter sweet as the rallying community regretfully lost a valued member at the event. Driver Matthew Marker lost his life in an accident during the first day of racing. Rally America took the step to cancel the rally there after as a mark of respect.

Speaking of the tragedy, Travis said "We did what we came to do points wise, but it's hard to celebrate when you lose a good friend in the process." He continues, "motorsport is dangerous, and we know that something like this can happen, our thoughts and prayers go out to the Marker family and friends."

The next event of the Rally America National Championship is the Oregon Trail Rally from May 13th to 15th. The team heads to Portland to race what some have called the trickiest roads on the calendar.

Portland, Oregon plays host to the upcoming event, which includes a "Superspecial" stage at Portland International Raceway, where fans can get up-close and personal with the teams competing.

Littleton, NH, 26th April 2011 - Travis Hanson will begin next weekend's Olympus Rally holding the lead in both the overall standings, and the Super Production class standings, yet his feet remain firmly on the ground as his aim is the Super Production championship.

As usual, Travis will be co-driven by his father Terry. The pair are looking to deliver a good result, after last years disappointment on the Washington based Olympus Rally.

To-date in 2011, the Hansons have enjoyed an unprecedented level of success, which began in the first round of the championship when they steered their Super Production specification 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX STi to outright victory at the Sno*Drift rally.

In claiming the overall win they became the first ever Super Production class competitors to win a Rally America National event outright, and in-turn assumed their deserved place in the Rally America history.

Following up the victory at Sno*Drift, the T. Hanson Motorsports' pairing delivered another good performance at the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood in Missouri, as they claimed fourth overall, and first in their class.

The long break between the second and third rounds of the Championship left Travis longing to get back behind the wheel. "I am excited to get back in the car after a long break in the schedule. Some of the roads at Olympus are my favorites because of the beautiful scenery and because of their fast flowing nature," said Travis.

Speaking of the challenge they face in keeping ahead of the manufacturer backed entries, Travis said "It will be hard to stay in front of the charging open class cars of SRT USA and L’Estage, if we have another strong finish, it is still possible for us to continue to lead the overall championship."

Even though Travis is more than happy to sit at the top of the outright championship standings, he has made it clear that his focus is on the Super Production title. "This however is not our main goal” he says.

The next three rounds of the championship comprise the Olympus Rally (April 30 - May 1), Oregon Trail Rally (May 13 - 15) and Susquehannock Trail Rally (June 3 - 4), and with all in fairly close succession, Travis believes consistency is the key.

"The next events are all within 5 weeks time, and stretch cross-country 3000 miles one way. I believe the drivers that are the most consistent at these events will have the upper hand in the championship,” said Travis, adding "It is our goal to be a consistent team and one that is always there fighting for a spot on the podium".

Concluding, Travis spoke of the close nature of the Super Production class, and it's ever increasing speed. "The competition of this class is really good with ex-factory Subaru and Mitsubishi drivers pushing the class faster. We’ve had a great start to the season and we are excited for the next event.”

Hanson Wins Super Production Continuing to Lead Rally America Championship

February 28, 2011 – Salem, MO –Travis and Terry Hanson claimed the Super Production Class win at the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood with their 2007 Subaru Impreza STi, finishing in 4^th place overall. Combined with the team’s historic overall victory at the season opener, Sno*Drift Rally, they remain the overall leaders of the 2011 Rally America championship.

“The goal for this race was to stay focused and clean,” said Travis. “We had to be sure we finished well to score overall points against the faster open class competitors.”

“We really tried to race our own rally this weekend. We couldn’t allow the pressure of being the leader effect us,” explained Travis’ father and navigator Terry Hanson.

Day one of the race saw the team solidly in contention for class honors, finishing in 2^nd place, just 20 seconds behind past Subaru Factory driver, Ramana Lagemann. In addition to Lagemann, Lauchlin O’Sullivan was also competing in the SP class with another professional background previously driving for Mitsubishi USA rally team. With such a competitive field, Hanson was pleased with the day’s result and planned to push harder on the fast stages the following day hoping to gain the class victory.

Sadly, that battle became moot early on the second day when Lagemann was involved in a huge accident ending his rally on the day’s second stage. “It’s a shame that Ramana crashed. Competition that close is what makes this class so great. I hope he can make it back for the rest of the season,” stated Travis.

The team performed extremely well together and by the end of the rally they had gained a lead of almost two minutes over the next super production competitor, claiming their second win of the year.

A battle between SP class leader Ramana Lagemann, Travis Hanson, and Lauchlin O'Sullivan is expected on the long Leg of the 100AW Rally. Lagemann and co-driver Chrissie Beavis are rapidly adapting to their new STI and lead SP by less than 20 seconds over Championship leaders Travis and Terry Hanson.

O'Sullivan and his co-driver Scott Putnam were down on power early in the day and also dealt with diff issues, but feel more confident going into Day Two and plan to keep pressure on the Hansons. Hanson and O'Sullivan are only 12 seconds apart after SS6.

Sitting fourth in class is Roman Pakos, who has had a consistent drive so far despite not having his regular co-driver, Matt Sawicki, in the car with him for this event. Evan Cline and co-driver Greg Dorman finished the day fifth in SP in their WRX, which is currently the most underpowered car in the class. Cline is aiming to finish 100AW in the top ten overall.

Travis Hanson came into 100 Acre Wood as the unlikely overall leader - a privateer in an SP Class car. The SP cars are built to keep racing even, and on a budget - they weren't built to beat the whole damn field. We find out how Hanson did it, and if he can keep it up.

Blockwood: You're the only Travis in the sport now (Pastrana's quick entrance and exit at 100 Acre Wood nearly proved me wrong), and you've been on the comeup for a couple years, how do you keep having successes?

Travis Hanson: Hard, hard, hard work. No one has gifted me anything in my rally career. Everything we have achieved has been through a strong will, a lot of patience, and hard work. It s passion that really keeps me going.

Blockwood: You run in the SP class, what exactly does that mean?

Hanson: SP class is Super Production. These are stock cars that have been only slightly modified and had some safety stuff added. To me it means I have to push the car to its limits and try to keep it there. Momentum and smooth driving gets you to the top of the podium in these cars.

Blockwood: Obviously it must feel good to have won Sno*Drift outright, do you think you can do it again, or was your win in an SP car a combination of circumstances?

Hanson: The win at Sno*Drift was amazing, a dream come true. If there was one event I thought we could win in the SP car it was Sno*Drift. The great thing about driving on snow is that it equalizes the cars. It doesn t matter if you have a factory supported Subaru or some old jalopy you built in your dads garage, you have to be a good driver.

Blockwood: What, are three things that you feel you've done right in the sport - contributing to where you are now?

Hanson: Wow, tough question. The first thing that pops into my mind is that I spend a lot of my time working on my car. I know everything about it and how it all works. To me, that gives me a comfort when driving the car. The next thing is attending Team O Neil Rally School. It really helps to understand some vehicle dynamics when you are trying to win rallies. The third thing I have is good friends and family. Without the help and support of others, I would have never got as far as I have.

Blockwood: What's your plan for 100AW? Are you planning on snow, mud, or ice? Sometimes it's hard to plan on anything in Missouri.

Hanson: Of course I would love another snow rally, but I think we are going to have a mix of gravel and mud. We have to drive our own race and be smooth. At 100AW the roads are smooth and fast. The roads reward drivers that can commit to the fast corners, but if you get to the outside of the road there are trees and rocks and well a bunch of things that can ruin your weekend and your rally car. Blockwood: One last word of advice to all the kids with gravel on their minds?

Coming off a historic performance in the opening round of the 2011 Rally America National Championship, Travis Hanson and co-driver Terry, are off to the foothills of the Ozarks for the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood. The Hansons secured a place in American motorsports history while recording the first-ever overall victory for a Super Production class car, during last month’s Sno*Drift rally, in Michigan. The popular victory was made even more impressive by virtue of the fact that they were able to beat factory-backed, professional efforts in their privateer Subaru STi.

This weekend the father-son team will face renewed challenges from fellow Super Production competitors as well as the Open Class teams who find themselves looking up at the Hansons in the standings. The event is based in Salem, Missouri and runs through the scenic, Mark Twain National Forest and is known to be a challenging race due to the high speed nature of the roads and changing conditions.

In the past, the teams have been confronted by road surfaces that range from dry, to slick and ice to snow during the same weekend. A fact not forgotten by Travis who remarked, “Hundred Acre Wood is a favorite event of mine and we have had success here before. With conditions changing from day to day at times, you’re never sure what to expect which adds to the challenges we’ll face if we want to follow up our win.” Last year the team won the SP class along with 5th place overall.

Between Sno*Drift and 100 Acre Wood T. Hanson Motorsports has spent considerable time searching for sponsorship. “In order to make our efforts sustainable for the rest of the year, we have to find some support,” explained Travis. “We have proven that we are competitive, our car prep is good now we just need some color on that white car!”

Team O’Neil Rally School in New Hampshire has stepped up as a supporting sponsor for the remainder of 2011. Travis is an instructor at Team O’Neil. “The education I have received from Team O’Neil over the past few years has been instrumental in my success,” stated Travis. “Team O’Neil is the best driving school in North America and I am proud to wear the Team O’Neil flag.”

Currently residing atop both the overall and Super Production standings in this season’s Rally America National Championship, both father and son are eager to return to the stages and continue their drive for a title. “Our season began in the best possible way,” said Terry, “and we hope to see another solid finish.”

The Rally America National Championship continues the last weekend of February in the majestic foothills of the Ozarks. That’s where two international rally champions will try to get to the end of the event and hold off the early challenge from points leader Travis Hanson who won the first event of the season last month on the frozen roads of northern Michigan......

More than forty teams are scheduled to compete on some of the best roads in the nation for rallying at the 100 Acre Wood Rally based in and around Salem, MO on February 25-26th, 2011. The fast, tight, twisty, and normally dry roads will create some excellent opportunities to see the driver/co-driver teams challenged in their battle for National Championship points. Two of those teams have one goal: re-establishing their preseason favorite status!

Much of the North American rally community, however, remains abuzz over the Hanson win at Sno*Drift; a near four-minute victory in a Super Production (SP) Class car against more powerful Open Class machinery. Hanson set a blistering pace in the Michigan cold and he hopes to continue a strong showing in Missouri where he won the Super Production category last year and finished fifth in the overall standings.....

The privateer team pulled off a major win for working stiffs everywhere at Sno*Drift. Classed in Super Production, the father/son duo overcame all other competitors (even those in the Open Class) to take the overall event win, the first SP team to do so in RallyCar history. Their Subaru Impreza WRX STI is strikingly devoid of sponsor stickers, made even whiter by the lack of logos. Having been invited to the 2008 and 2010 X Games, the Hanson's are no strangers to the underdog story. They’ve just managed to overcome it.

Travis and Terry Hanson lead the 2011 Sno*Drift Rally with a powerful four minute advantage going into the overnight halt. Hanson drove his Super Production class 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX STi flawlessly on the opening day of the rally, capitalizing on the early retirements of leading drivers Antoine L’Estage and David Higgins.

Hanson is trailed by Rally America’s 2010 Rookie of the Year, Joseph Burke, who holds second overall in an Open class Mitsubishi with 9.1 seconds over Ark Gruszka, also in a Mitsubishi. Hanson leads the Super Production field by five minutes over SP drivers Roman Pakos and Jimmy Keeney, who are only seven seconds apart.

Hanson’s X Games Rollover & Partnership with Autostream

Traverse City, MI — Rally car driver Travis Hanson arrived in Los Angeles for his X Games appearance without the massive fan-fare that factory backed, well known stars like Travis Pastrana, Ken Block, and Brian Deegan receive. Hanson would leave Los Angeles with a taste of fame.

Although he did not medal he stunned fellow competitors and fans around the world with his third fastest qualification time against cars twice as fast as his own Subaru STi. Hanson’s car was actually the heaviest and most underpowered competing at the X Games. His Subaru is a Super Production car meant to compete in traditional stage rally, not the rallycross style events at this years X Games. Other than suspension and a roll cage his car is almost the same as a Subaru anyone can buy at a local dealership.

Pushing as the underdog during qualification, Hanson actually wrecked the front of his car into a barrier, cracking his radiator on this excellent qualifying run. Needless to say, there was lots of excitement when he beat nine of his fellow competitors in much more powerful cars and then quickly had to fix the car in order to continue. Because of his excellent seeding time, Hanson automatically advanced past an elimination round to the quarterfinals. Where he went head to head against Canadian driver Andrew Comrie-Picard in a close fought battle. Even though Hanson suffered engine trouble, which gave him a scare on the70 foot jump, he kept a tight race.

However, Hanson caught a rut while sliding through the downhill hairpin of the course and rolled his car in a spectacular fashion, landing on his tires in a cloud of dust. Hanson was the first car to roll in the X Games Rally Car Racing since the late, great Colin McRae did back in 2006, in the same body style Subaru.

Despite the roll Hanson has received lots of publicity and support. The Autostream (http://autostream.com/) online media network, which produces online shows like Fast Lane Daily (http://www.vodcars.com/fastlanedaily) and The Smoking Tire (http://www.thesmokingtire.com/), purchased the wrecked hood of Hanson’s Subaru to use as a white board in their West Coast office.

Hanson competes on a tight budget that is mostly composed of his own finances and fan support. In fact he was the only X Games competitor to put his fan’s names on the side of his car. Other sponsors such as Exedy, Import Image Racing, Braid wheels, BFGoodrich Tires, Broken Motorsports, Team Illuminata, and the M-22 clothing company out of Michigan all helped to send Hanson to the X Games this year. “Without the support of our fans and sponsors we would have never made it to X games. I am forever grateful to all who helped my team,” explained Travis.

Grassroots rally car driver Travis Hanson has arrived in Los Angeles after a cross country, coast to coast trip, which was supported along the way by fellow Subaru drivers and fans. Hanson has traveled across the country to compete in Rally Car Racing in the LA Memorial Coliseum at the X Games this weekend.

Hanson traveled from Littleton, NH to Los Angeles to compete with big names in rally and action sports like Travis Pastrana, Ken Block, Dave Mirra, and former Indy 500 winner Kenny Brack. Along the way Hanson and team met with fans at the Giant’s Stadium just outside of New York City and later held a barbeque with Broken Motorsports, a supporting partner of Hanson, in New Jersey.

Along the way Hanson also made a stop in Toledo, OH, where he met with Team Illuminata Racing, who has partnered with Hanson and provided him with a brand new set of Braid Wheels for his X Games appearance. Clutch manufacturer Exedy has also teamed up with Hanson for this spectacular event, providing their parts and support.
Further down the road Hanson made a stop In Indianapolis at Tom Wood Subaru, a local Subaru dealership. The Indiana Impreza Club and fans gathered for a meet at the dealership where they presented Hanson with a collection of funds to donate to the cause and then escorted him out of Indianapolis, flanking his truck/trailer with their Subarus. The Subaru factory in Lafayette, IN even sent a representative down for the meet and presented Hanson with a care package as well. Look for an Indiana Impreza Club sticker on the car this weekend at the X Games.

Some last minute support came in from BFGoodrich as well. Hanson will be driving on their special made rally tires this weekend at the X Games.

“I wouldn’t be here without the support of these people and everyone who has helped me along the way, especially the fans. We would have been done after New England had we not gotten the help,” said Hanson. Hanson was invited to the X Games after a very impressive first start of the Rally America season that saw a couple first place finishes on the Super Production podium. Unfortunately though, his season ended badly in the New England Forest Rally after his suspension gave way and broke apart in mechanical failure as he was contesting the Super Production championship.

“We might be down on power, we might have the most competitive vehicle, but our heart and desire is greater than the competition. No one wants to be here more than me right now,” said Hanson. Hanson is brining his 2007 Subaru WRX STi Super Production car from the Rally America Series to compete against a field of Rallycross cars which are lighter and much more powerful, in some instances twice as powerful. “This is the most challenging thing I’ve done in my entire life,” said Hanson of his competition.

Hanson, his team, and especially his fans have the heart to compete though. His fans are especially full of heart, they have sent him to the X Games and many of their names appear on the side of the car as a testament to that. At X Games he will be one David vs. eleven Goliaths.

“The biggest upset in X Games rally car racing history came at X Games 14 when Travis beat PWRC favorite Niall McShea in their preliminary match up. I expect nothing less from Travis at X Games 16,” said J.B. Niday, Rally America’s Managing Director. Hanson has competed as an underdog before two years ago and is used to the challenge. This year will be harder though as the competition has gotten better, but that hasn’t deterred him from the 3,000 + mile long drive across the country to compete for his fans.

No, it's not a new rally hair style but Team Illuminata Motorsport (TIM) is
excited to be represented at the 2010 X-Games by non other than Travis
Hanson in his Subaru WRX.

"Travis is a Michigan native and a terrific competitor. We are glad to be

Only twelve drivers in the world get invited to compete at the X Games and Travis Hanson has proved to be one of the best with his invitation. Travis runs the team out of Michigan with his father/co-driver Terry and they compete with a white 2007 Subaru WRX STi, not far removed from the same one that can be bought off the sales-lot. Because of lack of big sponsor support, as of this current date, Travis is actually going into the X Games with his car prepared for the Super Production class in which he usually races. This means that Travis will be down at least 200hp or more on his competitors. This doesn’t mean Travis won’t be competitive though—only that every victory will be that much sweeter. Hanson is a rally instructor at Team O’Neil Rally School in New Hampshire and we are all certain that he will be able to take down the much more powerful competition in this David vs. Goliath battle.

Nearly every dime the team has spent has come from their own pockets. They are truly a "peoples" team because they prove that anyone with enough heart and ambition can come out and transform themselves from fans into world class competitors. The Hanson’s actually got into rally in 2005 after spectating at their “home” Sno*Drift Rally in Atlanta, MI. Hanson has proved that with enough heart and ambition anyone can come out and compete with the super stars of action sports in the X Games.

People are already talking about Hanson and the upcoming X Games. “The biggest upset in X Games rally car racing history came at X Games 14 when Travis beat PWRC favorite Niall McShea [From England] in their preliminary match up. Super Production rally car driver Travis Hanson will be fighting for the Super Production Championship in his Subaru WRX STi this weekend at the New England Forest Rally (NEFR) in Bethel, Maine from July 16th-17th.

Hanson currently holds second place in points, followed by Pat Moro. Hanson is only 6 points behind Moro in the championship and could easily overtake him as the wining driver is awarded 22 points.

When we were invited in 2008 I thought it was a once in a lifetime experience. Travis and Terry Hanson (Car #523) rolled their car on the Randall I stage (SS9) and are out of the rally. This DNF compromises Hanson's large lead in championship points.

Driving at this level of speed and precision, every little rock, tire slip, steering movement , brake pulse and throttle input is critical. The nature of a rally road is ever-changing as every car goes down the road. Driver and Co-drivers must be in perfect harmony, synchronized with the car and the Jemba pace notes. Even when everything is perfectly aligned, disaster is still a possibility. STPR has pinched the T-Hanson Motorsports team once again.

This is a major upset for T-Hanson Motorsport. A DNF ( did not finish) is a huge loss in point and puts the championship battle into a very tight fight. Knowing the championship is still within their grip, Travis and Terry have evaluated the damage. The team is heading back to home base in Traverse City Michigan, and will be planning to rebuild the car in the coming weeks to prep for the NEFR event in Maine, July 15 -17th 2010.

Start day 2 - STPR

Friday night ended with a complete inspection of the cars suspension, replacement of rear swaybar links and front hub / bearing assembly.

Starting day 2, T-Hanson was dominating the field, pressing the competition beyond the limits of cars and drivers. Currently the team is making up 2 seconds per mile on all the other cars in the field.

STPR Day 1 - Update - 2 Front Flat tires and lost time !

STPR roads are known for the rough, suspension pounding jumps, car crushing trees and tire slicing surface.

T-Hanson has started day one with a great lead, fast times, and unfortunate damage.

In the early Waste-Management stages, the car got a left front flat. Travis was about to pull off to change the tire, when the right front also took a laceration and went flat. With only 1 spare, the team decided to press on the 5 miles to the finish of the stage. Controlling the car on 2 front flats is difficult, as the tires shred themselves apart, the race rims begin to take the abuse of the rough rock roads.

At the end of the stage, a competitor lent the team a spare, and both fronts were replaced, unfortunately four positions and two minutes of time was also lost.

STPR is one of the premier events to be a spectator. The organizers of the event have set up many great locations for spectators, and media to safely get very close to the action of this rally.

The event is located near the "grand canyon of the east", in the most beautiful wooded, deep country of Pennsylvania, and is one of the best events in the east coast of America.

Travis Hanson of T-Hanson Motorsports is always a crowd favorite in the east, at both STPR and NEFR. Estimates of over three thousand spectators are in the region, and license plates show that spectators travel from New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Ohio, as far as Kentucky, North Carolina, Ontario and Quebec. Spectators love to see the beautiful shinny mechanical marvels that Rally Cars are when they begin and event, and the passion of rally is shown by the car's durability and drivers ability to press on to the finish. For spectators and marketing partners, it is often the determination and commitment to completion and that defines a great car and team.

T-Hanson as has some great success, and struggles at STPR over the past years. Last year (2009), T-Hanson finished with a 3rd place podium seat. T-Hanson was in a good position to take a lead, but a fuel system problem caused intermittent issues, resulting in a spin, and impact, where the car suffered minor cosmetic damage.

Travis and Terry were able to make up time, at the end of day 2, pushing the SP car to the limits and blistering speeds of an Open Class car during the final SUPER SPECIAL spectator event at the finish.

Travis and Terry of T-Hanson Motorsports are ready to battle for the 2010 Super Production class championship, and once again return to the X-games. The Driver, Co-driver, car and crew are prepped and ready for a tight and exciting race !

The Waste Management Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally®, presented by Citizens & Northern Bank, is a National Rally, approximately 300 miles long with approximately 128 miles of competitive stages. The Sherwood Forest Rally is a Regional Rally (for competitors who are not running for national Rally America Championship points), coefficient 2 that includes Stages One through Six and is approximately 48 miles. The Finger Lakes Rally is a Regional Rally, coefficient 3 that includes Stages Seven through Ten and is approximately 80 miles – both Regional rallies are run in conjunction with the full national event.

OTR day 2 - Fast rough damaging roads

DAY TWO -

Attrition continues to put competitors out of the race.

The northeast regions of The Columbia Gorge , the bed of the Hood River, and the Mt. Hood National Forest are known throughout the world as the most breathtaking places in the Pacific Northwest. This region is also known for giant trees that line rough tight forest roads, with razor sharp - tire slicing rocks. Many of T-Hanson's competitors and friends have fallen victim to these conditions.

At the end of day 2, more then 9 of the competitors, including top open class racers, have rolled or gone "off" the road, sustaining enough damage to conclude their weekend. The T-Hanson team experienced a minor scare when a chipped windshield began to crack and splinter. The service crew prepped for removal and replacement of the windshield, but after review by Rally America technical inspectors, it was determined that is wouldn't be needed.

T-Hanson finished day 2, 5th over-all and only 26 seconds behind the closest SP class competitor, and 1 minute 32.6 seconds ahead of the next closest in SP.

With over 6,000 spectators on sight for the Friday spectator focused Special Stages (1-4), Driver Travis and Co-driver Terry Hanson have seated themselves in a strong and conservative position ! The PIR mix of Tarmac and Dirt / Gravel stages are an interesting mix that require the highest level of attention from the driver.

Saturday starts with Parc Expose in The Dalles, OR.

Seven of OTR’s Sixteen Special Stages will be run in the areas surrounding The Dalles and Dufur. The day will end with a ‘Rally Street BBQ’ at the Dufur City Park.

The T-HANSON Motorsports Team is back in Portland, Oregon to contest the Oregon Trail Rally, May 14-16. The Oregon Trail Rally is a 3 day extreme motorsport event that tests driver’s skill and vehicle reliability to the limit. Competitors will face the challenge of northwest Oregon gravel roads over a course that is 115 miles in length.

The past few weeks the team has been working hard to prepare the 2007 STI, leaving no detail unattended. " We are ready to battle for the championship and Return to X-GAMES 16 RALLY EXPO in LA, California (July 29 - August 1, 2010) ", says Driver Travis Hanson. "It is going to be a great race, and we are in tight competition for the podium finish against the other 12 SP class cars, but we are in a good position to take a lead."

Thursday morning look for T-HANSON motorsport STI and / or Driver Travis Hanson, and crew to appear on the KGW Northwest News Channel 8 morning show from 5 -7 am with Drew Carney.

Thursday from 11 am – 1 pm The car and Driver will be present at the Oregon Trail Rally Fan Appreciation Show in Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland. The Friday Fan Spectacular at Portland International Raceway (PIR) begins at 6 pm with a Parc Expose (car display) where (last year) over 5,500 fans view the competition cars up close and talk with the drivers. It is followed by a series of very exciting timed competitive special stages specifically designed for spectator viewing.

Saturday morning starts with another Parc Expose at 10 am in The Dalles . At 11 am the cars will leave at one minute intervals and head out to the forest stages which includes the spectator favorite at Fir Mountain. Rally fans in Oregon are familiar with this Hood River site, and 1000 fans packed the hillside last year.

After a service stop back in The Dalles the show moves out to the Dufur area (15 miles south of The Dalles). A rally car service area will be set up in the City Park, with spectating venues nearby. At the service areas, the T-Hanson Motorsport team with refuel and make necessary adjustments to the STI. The service areas are open to the public and are similar to being in the pits at a circuit track race. Saturday's action concludes in downtown Dufur at 7:30 pm with a “Rally Street Party & Barbeque” in the city park open to all rally fans.

On Sunday, teams return to Dufur. Look for T-Hanson to finish the race, and take a podium position on Dufur's Main Street around 4 pm

Day one of the Olympus Rally unfolded along the Pacific coastline of Washington State as the best teams in North America began their bid for mid-season honors. Hosted in the picturesque town of Ocean Shores, Olympus is the third round of six in the Rally America Championship and provides a combination of challenging conditions with technical stage roads and unpredictable weather.

Super Production leaders Travis and Terry Hanson had a crash on SS3 and were unable to continue but are expected to repair the car in time for the Oregon Trail Rally in May.

Grassroots Competition: The Struggles of Sponsorship

As Rally America and the sport of rallying grow in the United States, so have the teams that compete. Travis Pastrana and Ken Block, two of the biggest names in rally, have significant support, but most of the competitors in the Rally America circuit are grassroots and compete out of their own wallets. Sometimes they are barely able to scrape by to make it to a rally. These teams, although small, can still be found at or near the top of the points’ board.

One of those teams is T. Hanson Motorsports, a father/son rally team led by driver and son Travis Hanson. Both teams have humble Midwest roots, PMR Motorsports based out of Dublin, OH, and T. Hanson Motorsports loosely based out of Traverse City, MI. Hanson pilots , a 2007 Subaru Impreza STi, in the Super Production class.

Hanson got started in rally after first spectating with his father at Sno*Drift. The following year they worked on a service crew for a team. After that team decided that they were going to get out of rally Hanson and his father decided that they were going to give rally a shot and bought their car.

All of these drivers supported themselves in the beginning and in especially Hanson’s case continue to do most, if not all of it, out of pocket. When asked about support in the beginning, Rooney had an interesting insight into where it came from and what his philosophy was.

“My bank account. No wife, no kids, no ex-wife, no dog and currently no girlfriend. What else are you suppose to spend money on?”

Hanson is currently in first place, leading with nearly twice as many points as Rooney. Initial success came for Hanson in 2006, only his second year of rally. He placed first in Production GT class in the Central Region in his regional championship. Since then Hanson has stepped up his efforts to compete at the National level of rally. Hanson also has the background experience as a driver instructor at Team O’Neil rally school to help give him a leg up on the competition.

Hanson is full time with his rally team.

“For at least the last three years doing national events has been my entire life. I’m totally committed to what we are doing here.”

He continues, “Every dime has gone into this.” Currently he is working on a little marketing team to publicize his team even further. Even with his experience and current dramatic lead Hanson has worries, “I think there will come a point in time soon that if if we don’t get a whole lot of sponsorship or any sponsorship, and you know, well we can’t maintain what we are doing now forever, that’s for sure.”

So Hanson, like many others, continues to work at gaining sponsorship which in many cases can be a full time job.

Even though Hanson is at the top of Super Production right now, he believes that more is possible. “We could do a lot more if we were at that next level of [sponsorship] commitment were the factory drivers are.” Hanson’s thought on this comes from his personal finances, if he wrecks, his bank account has to try and cover it.

The hunt for sponsorship is always on these and many other teams’ minds. It can mean the difference between being able to make it to the rally or not. This thought is on the minds of many of the drivers as the season shifts to the West coast rallies, like Olympus Rally, which can be a logistical and financial nightmare for the Midwest and East coast teams because of the extra cost to operate so far from home. This is especially true for teams like...T. Hanson Motorsports.

So as the season progresses the teams will continue to develop themselves and place points on the board to attract those desperately needed sponsors. They have come from ..., “clueless” new guys to serious competitors with multi-car teams, marketing strategies, and most importantly, big points on the leader board. There is still work to be done however, and they will continue to ..., “strive to become better”. They just need that extra little push to go from grassroots to household.

T. Hanson Motorsports Claims Second SP Class Win, Increases Championship Lead.

(March 18, 2010) The father-son team of Travis and Terry Hanson claimed another win in the Super Production (SP) Class at the 100 Acre Wood Rally which was held February 26-27, 2010. The teams dominating performance on the first day of competition built a lead that proved insurmountable for the other SP competitors. Travis kept the pace high and the team finished cleanly in 5th overall, splitting the more powerful open class field.

After the first day Travis had won all five stages in the SP class and gained a lead of over two minutes. After an impressive show of speed and skill at Sno*Drift held at the end of January Travis goes on to say, “I wanted to push hard from stage one and see where everyone else was after the first day,” explained Travis. “I felt the need to prove our speed at Sno*Drift was not just a one time deal.”
Day two started much like the first with the team winning the first four stages in SP and stretching their lead to over three minutes. “After the super special we brought our pace down to maintain our lead,” Terry stated. “We had a good lead in SP and there was little chance of us catching Dave (Mirra).”

When the champagne was sprayed T. Hanson Motorsports had won the SP class by over two and a half minutes. Two consecutive wins make Travis and Terry the team to beat. With 44 points they lead the Rally America SP championship. Overall they are tied with Subaru Factory Driver Dave Mirra in fifth with 20 points.

“We are really excited about our great finishes. It puts us in a great spot for a run at the championship,” Travis added, “but honestly we had only planned to do a couple of events this year. Finances are tight and we pay for all race expenses ourselves. We have a lot of work ahead to make it to all of the remaining events.”

T. Hanson Motorsports has assembled a marketing team which is getting the word out about what the team can offer sponsors for the coming races and rest of the season. “We are actively searching for partnership opportunities and have heard comments on our all white car, we are presenting a chance to put some color on it!” encouraged Travis.

We look ahead to the next Race the Olympus Rally in Olympia, Washington, this April 24-25. Preparations have begun at T. Hanson Motorsports to make the car fully prepared to complete the season.

2010 Sno*Drift Success!

2010 A new year and a new rally season brings new hope to T. Hanson Motorsports. Sno*Drift 2010 was the first rally in the 2010 Rally America Championship and the first Super Production Class win for the T. Hanson team!

Preparations for Sno*Drift went well and the team came ready to fight for the SP class lead from stage one. Recce and the practice stage had shown that this was going to be a very slippery Sno*Drift. A thaw the week before the race had left the stages like an ice rink and snow banks very hard or in most instances nonexistent.

The race began and is was evident from the first few stages that Travis was out for a win. After day one Travis had stretched out dominating 6 minute and 50 second lead winning every stage for SP.

The second day brought a new challenge: Overall positions. The T. Hanson team started the day in 6th place and set out on a goal to be in the top 5 by the end. This was a tall challenge with nothing but top open class rally cars to chase. Success was again achieved when open class competitor Andrew Comprie-Picard and Subaru Factory driver Dave Mirra struggled with the icy conditions. "I wanted to keep a strong pace on the second day, but still conserve our lead by not leaving the road. That was pretty hard to do in those polished ice conditions," driver Travis Hanson explains.

At the finish the T. Hanson team had won the Super Production class by over 10 minutes
and placed in the top 5 overall. This is the best finish to date for Travis and his father Terry. "We are already preparing the car for the next race. I hope we can use this great momentum to do well at 100 Acre Wood!" explained Terry.

Redemption was not received at Oregon Trail Rally 2009.

Yeah so I think we went out on the same stage as last year. Well to be 100% correct it was a different stage, but the same stage # as last year. Either way I don't like this Rally, or maybe this Rally does not like me. We will have to wait until 2010 to try again. Maybe the third time is a charm, but I wont hold my breath too long. That rally is a long time from now.

On Friday night of the Rally we were doing OK. Better pace than I expected, but everyone else was going pretty fast as well.

We ended going a little wide on stage one and hit the infamous fence at PIR with the right rear of the car, a glancing blow, it didn't slow us down, but it did claim a tail-lamp. We replaced a rear link that night because it had a slight bend, but no real damage to the car.

Saturday morning rolled around quickly and we were off to start stages in Hood River, OR. B-E-A-utiful area with Mount Hood and other snow capped peaks visible in the distance. I felt good and after the first real stage we had regained some time and 3 places in Super Production and a few more overall. We came back to service with little to report to the crew other than a few more rocks in the road than we had expected. These rocks would be our demise on the next stage.

Stage 6 started and we had a great pace even though the rocks kept creeping on to the road. By the end of the 11 mile stage we were catching up to the car in front of us and dust became a big issue. The stage opened up out of the woods and there was a few long straights followed by some high speed corners. We came through one of the long straights with a good amount of speed, but as the corner approached I was blinded by the huge cloud of dust created by the car in front of us. By the time the dust had cleared it was too late and I had not slowed down enough for the corner. We hit a rock with the right front tire and the wheel exploded we landed in a field of other rocks that continued to damage the underside of the car.

All said and done 3/4 wheels were damaged (possibly unrepairable ) , the Skid Plate (Sump guard), Oil pan was bashed in, and possibly the oil sump. In Rally, its called a DNF (did not finish), and that sucks, but its better then damaging the car further.

Currently the car is still in transit from the west coast and I should have it in my hands by early morning . The work begins with only 10 days to rebuild and deliver to STPR. A tall order, but one I am willing to take on.

I will be honest, there was a time this past weekend where both my father and I had given up. That's right. I was going to fix the car and put it up for sale. I am not sure when, probably after a few drinks at the bar, but we both agreed that we were not the type to give up this easily. We have so much time, love, sweat and tears (and $) in to this sport and I think we might have been even more disappointed had we given up. At this point in time we are going to persevere and head on to the next race with even more enthusiasm to finish and finish well.

After a disappointing DNF last year, T-HANSON was forced to retire with no damage, joining the 18 other unfortunate victims.
The roads were fantastic, and slippy, with aggressive and tight roads weaving through the mountains.
This year, the event is centered out of Hood River, one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Road conditions are not yet known, and with no Recce, we will put pure skill to the test.

Olympus Rally '09 Recap!

What a weekend! I think this has got to be one of the most fun rally weekends I have had in a long time. With all of the trouble we had getting to this event I was not sure if we were ever going to make it to the end. By the time the clock on the first stage counted down to zero and we took off racing everything was good.

The first days stages started north of Aberdeen, WA in Tahoula along the beach. This is a beautiful area much like most of the North West. The weather was great. Tom and Kosta even got sun burns which they were very happy about. The stages were in good shape, but drag races.

Very long high speed straights that led into a chicane or a slight
corner to slow us down before the next long straight. We got a little too close to a section of bushes and shrubbery, that broke the co-drivers mirror, unlatched the hood pin on Terry's side and some of it even managed to make its way into the car thru the roof vent. You can imagine that a loose hood, flopping around @ 100 mph is a bit unnerving, but we pressed-on ! We were underpowered compared to some of the top competitors and it showed. We lost 10-15 seconds per stage.

At the end of the day Dave Mirra, Pat Moro and I were in a tight battle for second place with Piotr Wiktorczyk leading us in first place. The second day of racing was going to be interesting with more challenging stages and less drag racing.

Day two sent us south to the Oyster Capital of the World, South Bend, WA. Again this was a beautiful area with beautiful weather. South Bend is a small town on the coast, perfect for hosting this leg of the Rally. There was a vendor in the service area that offered oyster shooters. Tempting, but I resisted haha. Tom and Kosta did partake in a few shooters and I am told they were very good. Puke… I don’t like sea food; I worked on a fishing boat when I was in high school.

The battle was on! Mirra took off and started putting time on Pat and myself from the first stage. Pat and I battled trading stage times all day long. Then we came to the infamous Brooklyn stage.

On the way in we got a flat right rear early in the stage, but I wasn’t going to stop and change it. We drove most of the stage on the rim with a huge cliff on the right side of the car. That had to be the scariest stage ever. I have never been so happy to be at the end.

We lost 17 seconds to Pat on that stage. He was flying and he now had a lead on me by a few seconds. Time to fight back; two stages left. On the return of Brooklyn we were on a mission. Dave Mirra went wide and damaged his car. We found him still trying to drive the car out in a spectator area. Here is the result:

Pretty sweet huh? Anyway Pat got held by Dave still trying to drive out and we got our lead back by a few seconds. Last stage Pat was going to go all out, so we went all out and we beat him by 6 seconds.

We made it!!!

We are all here. We got in to the hotel last night at about 1:30 AM PST. When we awoke the truck and trailer had arrived.

Today was recce. During recce all of the competitors have a chance to see and review the stages once. The day started with the stages south of Aberdeen. It was raining hard at times, but the stages looked amazing. The forest here is still very green. Most of the trees here are just starting to get leaves, but the various bushes, ferns and pine trees make the area beautiful. I am really looking forward to running these stages on Sunday.

In the afternoon the sun came out and we headed North. These stages were very different. They featured fast roads that were rough, and some sticky chicanes. These stages were very close to the coast and one of the stages actually over looked the pacific ocean.

When we were all done for the day we went to the beach... Actually we found a beach access road that allowed us to drive right on the beach. There was probably 150 yards of exposed tidal beach that we got to drive on with our rental cars. We exercised the handbrake and did a few doughnuts in the sand, and then drove our through the water and waves just like they do in the car commercial. I always think "if the rental company only knew...?"

Tomorrow is day one of racing. The car is ready, and all I need is a good nights rest. With that, good night!

Keep on Flyin'

I think the truck is well on its way to the rally. At least I have not heard anything, and no news is good news right? Well kind of...

Everyone's flights have been delayed. I have been on the ground in Minneapolis for 4-5 hours. I am sitting in a plane right now working on my wireless card. We have tried to take off twice and failed both times. Mechanical issues with the plane is what we are told.

Most people just got off the plane the last time we got back to the gate, but I am stickin it out. There are 3 mechanics working on the plane right now. I think we are going to get some more fuel and give it another try.

My crew and father got delayed in Detroit for almost 2 hours. I have not heard from them in a while so I assume they are in the air.

So today has been a day I want to forget.

My uncle Mike got on the road yesterday headed for the Olympus Rally driving the PPD Motorsports Truck and Trailer with Piotr's car and our car on a 2 place trailer. He had a flat on the trailer that cost him about 4 hours in Wisconsin. I went bed thinking all was OK.

This morning I wake up a bit early and check what time it is on my phone. I notice that I missed 3 calls. I think there must be something wrong with my phone, but investigate more. I call voicemail and it is my dad at 2 am saying that Mike and the Truck are stopped and there is a big problem. I call my dad and he explains the whole story.

Basically Mike got pulled over in Minnesota. Originally it was for stolen plates. No the plates were not stolen, just a mix up, but enough attention was drawn to the vehicle. The total weight of the truck and trailer is too much for my uncle's license. He needed a CDL (commercial drivers licence). He got two tickets and they left him at a rest stop telling him that if he kept driving he could face huge fines and jail time...

WOW. What can ever prepare you for this stuff? We normally drive my 3/4 ton truck and a enclosed trailer to all of the events, but for this event we tried to save some money and teamed up with PPD Motorsorts. I guess not! By no means PPD's fault, but wow!

All day today we called everyone we know to figure out what we could do. Very stressful, and more than one time we considered withdrawing from the event. Press on Regardless...We hired a driver with a CDL to make the rest of the trip. Hopefully he has no more issues and my uncle makes it home safe to his family. I feel so bad for Mike! I don't ever want to put someone through this again! I count on so many people to do these rallies, and sometimes I wonder how I can ever repay them. Someday I will find a way!

The T - Hanson Motorsports team is headed west to ABERDEEN WASHINGTON for the OLYMPUS RALLY !

Co-Driver Terry has been working feverishly in Traverse City, prepping the car and reinstalling the Fresh Motor and NEW Transmission.

For the western adventure T-Hanson is teaming up with the PPD Motorsports Team, sharing a large truck and 2 place trailer in an effort to save costs! Today the truck was loaded, tomorrow the cars will be loaded and Mike will hit the road for his 2300 mile road trip.

Everyone else will be flying in on Thursday. Friday is a one pass reconnaissance pass. Saturday and Sunday are all racing! We can’t wait!

The Olympus Rally is returning to its roots in the western Washington. Leg 1 will go from the shores of the Pacific Ocean to the high crests of the southern Olympic Mountains where you can see the highest peaks of the Olympics to the north and the ocean to the south.

Leg 2 will head south to the world famous Brooklyn Tavern Stage, the fast and flowing Smith Creek Stage and the small town of South Bend. This will be a very scenic and fast flowing rally that will be one of the highlights of your year.http://www.olympusrally.com/

2009 - 100 Acre Wood Recap

The 100 Acre Wood Rally takes place in Ozark Mountains of Salem, MO. Team Hanson Motorsports was set to start the 2009 Rally America Series in their new prepped 2007 Subaru Impreza STi in the new Super Production Class.

The team arrived in waves from various parts of the country. Work began to put the finishing touches on the race car. Travis and Terry went out Thursday to recce the race course. Recce was very successful and the driver and co-driver felt well prepared to start the race the next day. On the other hand the car was not ready.

With a newly prepped car there are expected issues. However the car was not experiencing the normal new car issues. The issues that faced the team for the rest of the weekend were not easy to deal with and ultimately not fixable. The car had problems with the new diff controller. It made the car do very strange things and never worked as expected. It took lots of work and diagnostics to finally figure out that the car had improper final drive gears. It was not an issue with the controller at all.

The car also developed a big misfire on the transit to the first parc expose. The service crew worked diligently through the parc expose to try and solve the issue and it seemed as though the issue was solved. At the first service the car had used 2 quarts of oil and had pushed out a majority of its coolant. This had proved to be a much greater issues than before, but the team had to press on regardless…

Travis and Terry had a good first few stages. The car was not running correctly, and with out the diff controller the car drove mostly in rear wheel drive, but it was still fun and the times were not that far off the pace. The last 2 stages proved more difficult and the times were not as good.

The start on the Second day met the competitors with some snow. Team Hanson began the day 17^th on the road way off the pace they had expected. With the slippery conditions the Hanson’s were excited to start a new day of racing. They knew they had to make the best of the car they had.

As the day progressed Travis and Terry started to reel in some of the competitors that were in front of them. The culmination of the weekend was stage 14. There was 8 inches of snow on the stage and Travis was in his element. Team Hanson finished the stage 4^th overall and the fastest SP car. This stage also ended the rally as stage 15 was canceled due to heavy snow. Travis and Terry pulled back in to the top ten overall and 4^th in Super Production. A great finish considering the condition of the car.

Many thanks go out to Tom Knight and the rest of the Team Hanson Motorsports Crew!!! Also thanks to the Hanson Family for their continued support at the 100 Acre Wood Rally. With out everyone’s hard work and support this team would never survive.

Post race diagnostics proved that the motor was damaged. One of the pistons had cracked and another cylinder showed a massive headgasket leak. The motor was effectively running on 2 cylinders.
